When Original Good Boy, or OGB, an eight-year-old pup, found himself at the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, DC, he had no idea that his life was about to take an unexpected turn.
Transferred to St Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey, OGB spent his days waiting for a loving hooman to notice him, but as time passed, his hope began to fade.
That is, until Susan Wright, a 70-year-old woman, walked into the shelter just before Christmas and laid eyes on the depressed senior dog.
An Unlikely Connection
Susan wasn’t planning on falling in love with a senior pup that day, but when she noticed OGB with his back to the door, ignoring all attempts to engage him, her heart broke.
Despite his serious demeanor and muscular build, Susan couldn’t help but feel drawn to the dog who had spent so long waiting for a home.
I didn’t think he was particularly ‘cute’, he looked like a very serious dog. He had the square head of a bulldog and the compact muscular body of a terrier or pit bull, weighed about 80 pounds and was 8.5 years old,
she said.
OGB’s previous owner had loved him deeply, but due to unforeseen circumstances, he had been forced to surrender the pup to the shelter.
The staff at St Hubert’s quickly realized that OGB was a special boy, with an insatiable appetite for love and affection.
He couldn’t get enough love, belly rubs, and scratches. And when he gets really pleased, he does an adorable little ‘happy dance’,
Diane Ashton, a staff member at St Hubert’s, told Newsweek.
Building a Bond
Determined to help OGB find his forever home, Susan began taking him on field trips around the neighborhood, playing in the park, and treating him to puppacinos.
At first, the pair struggled to connect, with OGB refusing to look at or listen to Susan.
Realizing that OGB’s previous owner was likely a male who enjoyed running or jogging, Susan enlisted the help of a trainer to strengthen their bond.
The plan worked like a charm, and soon, OGB was winning over the hearts of Susan’s daughters, who thought he was quite handsome.
A Promise Kept
When Susan received news that someone was interested in adopting OGB, she realized that she couldn’t bear to say goodbye to the sweet boy who had stolen her heart.
She made the decision to adopt him herself, determined to keep the promise she had made to stay by his side until he found his forever home.
If he was with me, he would always be in a good home. If I described the dog I would have chosen, he probably wouldn’t look like OGB, and he probably wouldn’t be as old. But I also probably wouldn’t have thought about the traits that make OGB a wonderful housemate and who has (almost) always been well-behaved,
Susan said.
Now known as Ogee, this special senior pup has settled into his new home, his loving and gentle nature shining through with each passing day.
From comforting an injured child during a walk to showering his new family with endless affection, Ogee has proven that age is just a number when it comes to the love a dog can give.
When my daughters discovered what I was doing, they wanted to go on a walk with OGB. They loved him on sight and thought he was quite handsome,
Wright said.
Ogee’s transformation from a reserved, sad pup to a senior doggo with puppy energy is a testament to the power of a forever home and the unconditional love of a devoted hooman.
His story serves as a reminder that every dog, no matter their age or appearance, deserves a chance at happiness and a family to call their own.
