In the world of animal rescue, the emotional rollercoaster is all too familiar – the heartbreak of witnessing countless abandoned and suffering dogs, followed by the overwhelming relief when a lucky few find their way to safety and love.
This is the story of Gregory, a Beagle who narrowly escaped a tragic fate and couldn’t hold back his happiness when he realized he was finally safe.
A Close Call
Gregory’s life hung in the balance when he was found running astray in Obetz, Ohio, likely abandoned by his owners.
Despite being a friendly and energetic 2-year-old, his heartworm-positive status landed him on the euthanasia list at the Franklin County Shelter and Adoption Center.
With a treatment cost of $400, Gregory was labeled “rescue only,” and his fate was sealed if not pulled from the shelter by May 3rd.
Fortunately, Schenley Hutson Kirk, co-founder of Hound Rescue and Sanctuary in Findlay, Ohio, stumbled upon Gregory’s picture and knew she had to act fast.
Together with her husband, Joe, they dropped everything to save the little Beagle’s life.
An Unforgettable Freedom Ride
When Joe arrived at the shelter to pick up Gregory, he never expected the outpouring of gratitude that followed.
During the two-hour-long “freedom ride,” Gregory, tethered in the backseat for safety, couldn’t resist the urge to be as close as possible to his savior.
With his leash just long enough, the appreciative Beagle reached out to Joe’s shoulder, cuddling him the entire way home.
Schenley, upon receiving the photos from Joe, was stunned by the display of affection.

He is Heartworm Positive and will be going through treatment, but he knows he is in good hands! We will get him healthy and provide him all the love he so deserves and a wonderful future!

A Bright Future Ahead
Under the loving care of the Kirks, Gregory received the necessary veterinary treatment for his heartworm disease.
As he underwent his month-long antibiotic treatment and began heartworm medication, the resilient Beagle showcased his intelligence by quickly learning basic commands and proving to be house-trained.
He’s very laid-back, very happy-go-lucky, and his favorite thing to do is get lots of love from his people,”

It wasn’t long before Gregory’s charm captured the hearts of a forever family. Soon after his treatment, he was adopted and welcomed into a loving home, complete with a Beagle sibling to play with.
Reflecting on their mission, Schenley shared a touching sentiment: “We are often asked how many dogs we have saved. The answer that always comes to mind is, we have saved one more.
One more dog is safe and will have all of the love and respect that they are so deserving of. One more dog will be properly fed and receive needed veterinary care.
One more dog will have a loving forever home. There is no better feeling and nothing in life that is more fulfilling.“
